Memoirs of a Mad Scientist's avatar

The great scientific steps forward originate in the minds of gifted scientists, not in the minds of promoters. The best way to proceed is to be sure that really inspired scientists have what they need to work with, and leave them alone.—Vannevar Bush

Hi Steve I’m a Berkeley 2012 MBA/MPH. I’m furious if in that postwar era, government funding made up a very large percentage of total spending on science, technology, and innovation (STI), especially compared to private sector investment. Today, with the rise of venture capital and significant private sector involvement in STI, has there been a measurable shift? Do you have any estimates on what percentage of total U.S. STI investment today comes from government sources versus private sources? It would be interesting to see how that balance has evolved — and what the implications might be.

Too bad the US is abdicating the leadership in science in favor of finance. None of my nephews are pursuing STEM. The demise of peer review is a travesty along with the deterioration of the country’s universities. Good luck to everyone in the 21st century.

No matter how good or clever or brilliant something or someone is - unless the message is successfully communicated - that brilliance will remain a secret

Not among scientists. Even the Japanese scientists understood what the US accomplished in WWII. There are no secrets among those in the know.

The last line says this is all too late. US just need to get Trump out, and turn the R&D taps on again - brains win wars every time. The UK Government have done worse, Universities are now the dumping grounds for those without the skills and internal fortitude to make it in the real world. Unlikely they will be in fit state for a generation. We don't have time to sit around. It is a case now to either do or die. If the US and Europe and that now isolated little car park off the coast of France doesn't wise up and work together now or we had better get used to turning a blind eye to invasions, genocide and the kind of global suffering here at our feet in months.
