I just saw the movie Oppenheimer. A wonderful movie on multiple levels. But the Atomic Bomb story that starts at Los Alamos with Oppenheimer and General Grove misses the fact that from mid-1940 to mid-1942 it was Vannevar Bush (and his number 2, James Conant, the president of Harvard)
Fantastic piece Steve. Bush’s role was vital, he was a translator between the scientists and the governments, a vital role as you know well in corporate innovation. This video is also great: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTC_RxWN_xo
Bush also pioneered the idea of universities charging overhead on government contracts, up to 40% in some instances, which some have attributed to the rise of the modern research university (and by proxy, US supremacy in university-based R&D.)
All US tech roads can be traced back to Vannevar Bush!
Fascinating. I think your statement about doing things outside the government because the government couldn't do it holds true today.

You should have your own documentary streaming show based on this series. 🙏😊🧐
Excellent and necessary post! Nicely written, too!
